Grinding Operations in the Wood Products Industry

As in any industrial cutting operation, the tool - in this case a saw or knife - gets dull and must be re-sharpened.

Band saws are usually sharpened on automatic grinders. Circular saws may be sharpened on automatic or hand-operated grinders or "bummers", depending on the size and type of saw.

In the wood products industry, 36 to 54 grit size in friable or semi-friable aluminum oxide abrasives are used for general purpose saw sharpening. finer grit sizes such as 60 or 80 may be required for saws thinner than 18 gauge, or for circular saws with very close tooth space, such as "smooth trim" saws.

Many lumber remanufacturing operations, plywood plants, and saw mills use carbide-tipped saws which must be sharpened with diamond wheels. Saws for cutting metal may require grinding wheels of 100 grit or finer. Diamond wheels in 100 to 120 grit sizes work best on carbide-tipped saws.

The woodworking industry uses band saws in a great variety of sizes and types, so a wide variety of wheel sizes are used. These are only two basic shapes of all these sizes - the Type 1 or straight wheel and the Type 13 saucer wheel.

Type 1 - Straight Wheels                                    Type 13 - Saucer

The basic requirement for a wheel is that it hold its form or shape of face so that the proper contour of the saw tooth is maintained. The process must be done without having the wheel burn the gullets or points of the saw teeth.
